This XY GT-HO Phase III Falcon is not widely known, yet it was very close to becoming one of the most famous Bathurst cars ever, as it placed second two years in a row.

Phil Barnes and Bob Skelton drove this car in the 1971 race to second place, with the 1971 race well known for a similar GT-HO driven by Bill Brown involved in the single biggest car crash in Bathurst history, barrel rolling three and a half times. He escaped with minor injuries after his seat snapped on impact so he was lying flat when the car was cut like a knife on the barricades.

The 'supercar scare' and media frenzy saw both Holden and Ford abandon plans for faster models, which meant that in the 1972 race they were running the same cars as the previous year, effectively outdated models from what was available at dealers.

John French drove this 'wild violet' car in the 1972 race to second place and was very unlucky not to win. During the race he ran over some accident debris that punctured his tyre, but this was only discovered after passing the pit lane. He was forced to run a lap of the large Bathurst circuit with a flat tyre, costing him a whole lap. He made up a lot of time but not enough to catch Peter Brock who won his first Bathurst race.

In those days drivers were able to run the whole race by themselves and many preferred to do this so they knew exactly how the car was running. John French had an interesting story about how he packed some sandwiches and banana chunks in the centre console to keep him fueled during the race.
