Hemi refers to Hemispherical, a design for the top of the cylinder head that allowed for more power and the spark plug to be in the center.
Interestingly Chrysler first develoepd this type of engine design for the Thunderbolt WW2 fighter plane.
The 426 cu (7 litre) design is also known as Gen 2 as it was a more advanced design and first made its debut in Nascar in 1964. In car production form it was used by Dodge and Plymouth in iconic models like the Super Bee, GTX, Charger, Challenger and 'Cuda. It was also used overseas in the Jensen Interceptor and the Monteverdi Hai.
The Hemi design engine is still in use today by Dodge and Ram, although it has changed signficantly from that first race car in 1964.
