The Porsche flat six is a boxer style engine has been a very success race and street car engine produced over a long period of time.
While this engine can trace it's history back to the 4 cylinder VW Beetle engine, its design by Hans Mezger in 1963 has become the heart, soul and sound of the Porsche 911.
Air cooled engines did have some advantages over the dominant watercooled engines, as cool air travels faster than water, they required less room in the engine bay, and carried less weight due to less pipes, pumps and hoses.
To ensure that the engine was cooled adequately, fins were added to the design of the engine casing like what is seen on older air cooled motorcycles. A key Porsche innovation was the distinctive large fan which blew cool air all around the engine.
In Porsche style, some shirt designs here are inspired by distinct Porsche 911 colours like Speed Yellow, Star Ruby and Viper Green.
