This design has been inspired by the pre-production Mercury Cougar concept drawings of Peter Beck. These were drafted in 1964, several years before the first Mercury Cougar was produced. Ford was unsure whether the upcoming launch of the Mustang would be successful, so delayed this project and Beck was reassigned. The resultant 1967 Mercury Cougar was different, but had some clear styling cues similar to this slick design.
