The Cosworth DFV (double four valve) engine dominated Formula 1 for fifteen years and was the power unit for most constructers, apart from a few like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Renault.
Originally developed for Lotus and funded by Ford Europe, it became the power unit of choice for Formula 1 cars from the late 1960's to the mid 1980's, when turbo units replaced them.
Being relatively cheap and made available to all teams to purchase saw this engine power twelve F1 World Champions between 1968 and 1982.
