The white and red liveried McLaren team became one of the most dominant forces in Formula One history. This sponsorship with Malboro lasted between 1974 and 1996, and in that time achieved world champion drivers of Fittipaldi, Hunt, Lauda, Prost and Senna as well as seven constructors’ championships.
Nikki Lauda winning in 1984 was the beginning of the most dominant period from which this design draws its inspiration, with only Nelson Piquet (Williams) in 1987 prevented McLaren from recording clean sweeps over an eight year period.
Prost vs Senna became the story of Formula One, creating movies, books and the world’s attention. The statistics will show that Prost won the drivers’ championship in 1985, 1986 and 1989, and that Senna won in 1988, 1990 and 1991. The real drama behind the statistics was the rivalry and politics that culminated twice at the Japanese Grand Prix’s with tit-for-tat crashes creating world championship wins.
Despite the great rivalry, the two reportedly reconciled and became friends before the tragic death of Senna at Imola in 1994.
