The 1967 XR GT Ford Falcon driven by Harry Firth and Fred Gibson became the first Australian made car to win at Bathurst, as well as the first V8. The 289 V8 engines were no match for the smaller sized cars and the next placed Alfa Romeo 1600 GTV's could not compete down the long 'conrod' straight. Previously it was thought that Bathurst was too tough on these heavier cars and Studebakers had not been successful in the past running V8's.
Gibson did not receive the chequered flag in this race, which went to the pole sitter Leo Geoghegan. This confusion arose from Geoghegan almost running out of fuel and re-entering the pits in a way that an extra lap was counted.
Firth protested to the officials which led to his and team mate Fred Gibson being awarded the win, which lead to a lifelong animosity with Geoghegan who felt that he won.
