The Alfa Romeo Carabo was designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone and is considered one of the most influential car designs ever.
The low 33 Stradale chassis and a mid engine allowed this design to stand only a metre tall and begin the era of 'wedge' designs. It was also Alfa's first v8 engine. The Carabo was also the first concept car with front-hinged doors, which Gandini repeated when he introduced that into the Lamborghini Countach that he also designed.
Gandini was famous for many car designs, including the Lamborghini Miura. The instability of this car at high speeds led to this Carabo concept with greater downforce at the front of the car. the name and colour of the car were inspired by the scarab beetle 'Carabidae'.
