Allan Moffat won the 1970 Bathurst race with a Phase II XW Falcon. 1971 saw the introduction of the Phase III, with the 351 Cleveland engine. The increased power and improved internals saw Moffat record a pole time nine seconds faster than he recorded the previous year. Not only did he win the 1971 Bathurst race, but all thirteen Phase III cars had no engine issues and the top seven pole places were all Phase III cars.

The GT-HO Phase III was the last official GT-HO car with the Phase IV programme being cancelled due to political and media pressure, although three vehicles were created. HO stood for 'High Output' but was changed to be 'Handling Options' to lessen some of the growing political pressure over the power output of these production cars.

During the 1971 race, Moffat's car had a cardboard beer box stuck at the front of the car (pictured below) and he ignored pit calls to have it removed as he could see that it was having no affect on the cars temperature.

The XY Falcon GT 351 is probably the most valuable and sought after Australian car, and many clones have since been created from ordinary 6 and 8 cylinder standard road cars.
