Peter Brock won the first of his nine Bathurst victories at the 1972 race, which was the last year it ran 500 miles and also when only one driver could race - as Peter did to record his victory.

The Holden Torana was competing in Group C as it was a flat six cylinder engine, but with triple weber carbs and its lighter weight it proved to be a good match for the heavier and faster Ford V8's.

Allan Moffat had started on pole and was looking to record three wins in a row at Bathurst but a spin and later brake issue meant he dropped down the field.

With a Ford Falcon second and Chrysler Valiant Charger third, 1972 was the only Bathurst race with the big three Australian manufacturers all being on the podium.
