The Porsche 917 started the legend of Porsche at Le Mans, winning their first 24 hour race in 1970 and breaking the past dominance of Ferrari and more recently the Ford GT40.
The 1970 race was marred by wet weather and the four new Ferrari 512's had reliability problems. The Porsche 917 in the red 'Salzburg' design driven by Hans Herrman and Richard Attwood finished first, followed by the 'psychedelic' Martini Porsche 917.
Many of these 917's have become iconic. In addition to the Salzburg and Martini cars, there was also the 'pink pig' development car and the famous Gulf Oil version used as the hero car in the Steve McQueen Le Mans film.
Porsche have now become the leading manufacturer for race wins at Le Mans.
