The Lancia Stratos transformed the world rally championship when it first appeared, and began Lancia's domination of the WRC for a twenty year period. Even now some 28 years after they last won a WRC, Lancia have still won more titles than any other manufacturer.
The Stratos was designed by Bertone, with the now legendary designer Gandini creating the blueprint. Being a lightweight wedge design with a wrap around windscreen, it was an unusual configuration but excellent for rallying. Being powered by the Dino Ferrari engine gave it the needed power to win the WRC three years in a row.
The Alitalia branding has become one of the more famous racing liveries. Sadly this will not continue as from 2021 they ceased operating as an airline.
