1985 was the first year that Bathurst was a run as a Group A race, and Tom Walkinshaw brought three of his TWR Jaguar V12 cars to Australia and was determined to win.
John Goss was appointed to be the main driver of the third car, however many considered he was past his best as a race driver. He was to prove them wrong when he took the lead (with co-driver Armin Hahne) on lap after the leading Walkinshaw Jaguar driven by Jeff Allam developed engine trouble.
The seat bracket on this car broke when S was driving and when Goss returned for his final stint it was being held to the rollcage by cable ties. Unable to be properly supported he was unable to go fast around the corners and relied on the big V12 to maintain lap times with high speeds on the straight areas of the track.
The 1985 event was the first Bathurst race since 1969 that Allan Moffat did not enter, as he was left without a drive after Mazda pulled out of Touring Car racing.
TWR's partnership with Jaguar saw subsequent wins at Le Mans and the creation of the XJ220 and XJ-R15 supercars.
