1987 was the ninth and last time that the 'King of the Mountain' Peter Brock would win at Bathurst, an achievement that has not yet been surpassed.

When the flag dropped on this race, Peter was in third place. A protest had already been lodged over the illegal wheel arches of the first and second placed Ford Sierra's, however it took a few months to confirm the result, with both cars penalised. This was the first time that a race winner had never actually led at any stage in the race itself.

Brock started the race in his normal 05 numbered car, but it failed on lap 34 and he moved across to his other team car numbered 10, which interestingly he also drove as he set pole times with both cars.

This year had been very difficult for Brock, having lost his special relationship with Holden, who were jealous of the financial success of HDT (Holden Dealer Team) . There was a dispute and they set up their own race division, HSV (Holden Special Vehicles) in partnership with Tom Walkinshaw. There was also a matter of crystals...
