The Ring was built in 1927 around the castle town of Nurburg to showcase German automotive engineering, and was influenced by its design by Targa Florio event held in Italy.
The track was built with two rings: the north loop (Nordschleife) and the south loop (Sudschleife) with a current distance of approx 27 kilometres. The south loop has been remodelled over the years into the current F1 circuit, while the 24 Hours race event still uses the combined north and south loop layout, which is the design featured on this t-shirt.
While a popular race track for the public to drive their cars on today, few know that it has always been open to the public since its opening as it was a closed circuit that did not use public roads.
Infamously known as the 'Green Hell' after a Jackie Stewart comment after a fog and rain conditioned race, it was a dangerous circuit due to its long distance, high number of corners and the many bumps causing airborne lifts. It was the unfortunate scene of the Niki Lauda crash in 1976 where his Ferrari crashed and he was engulfed in flames.
The original italian connection in the track design has had an interesting payback, as Ferrari have recorded the most F1 wins at this track, rather than Mercedes.
