Audi unleashed this powerful 4 wheel drive race car onto the 1989 IMSA competition. It was so fast it was required to carry 300kg of ballast weight to slow it down.

The 80's were a resurgent decade for Audi. Their Sport Quattro rally car first won the 1982 WRC and is still a much admired car to this day, helped by its current use in Playstation Gran Turismo. WRC didn't generate many car sales in the USA so Audi planned an assault on IMSA with this powerful, light and 4WD race car.

It was the first IMSA car to use on board telemetry and data, helping Audi to learn quickly and optimise its race performance. It only missed out on winning the championship by two points, which was largely due to not being entered in the first two races of that championship.
