While it is well known that Sir Stirling Moss is described as the best F1 driver never to have won a world championship, it is less well known that his sportsmanship cost him a F1 title. In 1958 he supported Mike Hawthorn against a penalty that saw Mike regain six points and ultimately beat Stirling to the world championship by one point.
It is hard to imagine this being repeated in today's cut throat F1 world.
This shirt design is inspired by his 1955 Mille Miglia win, driving a Mercedes 300 SLR where Stirling won by a large 30 minute margin in the ten hour race, beating the then F1 world champion Fangio. This is considered one of the best driver performances in motor racing history. Straight after this race, Stirling then drove through the night and the following morning with his girlfriend to head to Cologne for lunch.
The number 722 comes from the cars scheduled start time of the race - 7.22 am.
