Ned started driving young...just nine years old and on the way to church. His father's encouragement stopped there, as he was later told he could work on Nascar's but not race them.
When his brother in law was sick, Ned drove for him using another name. This was repeated a few times and Ned became so successful his father relented and told him he could race, but under his own name.
His career was largely in partnership with Ford. He won the Southern 500 race in 1965 by 14 miles, the largest winning margin in Nascar history. When Ford retired from racing in 1966 Ned followed, and later switched to a career in broadcasting.
Know as 'Gentlemen Ned' he momentarily lost his impartiality when commentating the 1983 Daytona 500, as his son Dale held out Dale Earnhardt for the win.
