Colin Chapman's distinctive black and gold ‘JPS’ branded Lotus race cars first appeared in 1972. It was a prominent start with Emmerson Fittapaldi winning the world drivers’ championship, the youngest person to have been crowned the F1 champion at that time.

JPS branded Lotus were very successful, achieving drivers’ championships with Fittapaldi and Andretti, constructors’ championships three times and had high profile drivers such as Senna, Mansell, Peterson and De Angelis. A JPS branded Lotus won the constructors title in 1978, becoming the last time that Lotus would do so.

The JPS Brand extended past Formula One, with both Ford, Lotus and BMW selling JPS branded road cars.

The Lotus 72D designed here won the F1 world championship in both 1972 and 1973. When the 72 model first appeared it caused a sensation as it was the first F1 car to have moved the radiators to side pods and not in the front of the car, allowing for low drag and a wedge shape. the Lotus 72 model won the world championship three times and competed for six F1 seasons, arguably the most successful F1 car design ever.
