The first turbo in Formula one was the ‘15’ Renault RS01 in 1977. This was an experimental car and it took a few years before they became reliable, with the RS01 also nicknamed the yellow teapot as it was often seen to blow up and issuing white smoke. In 1979 the RS01 became the first turbo car to win a Grand Prix.
Other manufacturers followed and by the 1980 season most teams fielded turbo engines. Turbo’s became outlawed in 1989 however they have returned to Formula One from the 2014 season.
Since that initial success in 1979, Renault have recorded the third most wins as engine manufacturer in the history of Formula One.
