The Lancia Rally 037 was based off the Lancia Beta Montecarlo, also known as a Scorpione in the USA. Abarth were heavily involved in the design and the performance of this car and included past Abarth design cues like the 'double bubble' roof line.
While a beautiful looking car, it represented the end of the 2 wheel drive cars as championship winners, as Audi had unleashed their quattro system and changed the world rally championship ever since. The 037 managed to win the 1983 championship but even an uprated performance 02 edition wasn't enough to compete with the 4WD cars from the 1984 season onwards.
It wasn't the end for Lancia and success in the World Rally Championship, as work had begun on the Delta Integrale...
