Brooklands was the original race circuit for the British Grand Prix, but following World War 2 it was in a badly damaged state. Silverstone, a former air force base emerged as the new host circuit and in 1948 the first Grand Prix was held there, and won by Luigi Villoresi driving a Maserati.
In those days it was a different environment for race safety, with spectators being separated from the track by only a rope barrier.
Silverstone is a relatively high speed track due to the majority of corners being able to be taken at high speed, which is opposed to many F1 tracks with tight corners.
British drivers have been very succesful at this circuit, with Lewis Hamilton recording the most wins with nine. Other notable victories include Jim Clark (5), Nigel Mansell (4) and with two wins for Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart and David Coulthard.
British Constructors with major wins include Lotus (8), Williams (10) and McLaren (14), however Ferrari hold the most wins overall (18).
