The C111 development programme created by Mercedes-Benz was primarily designed to test new engine technologies, such as the Wankel rotary and diesel engines. However the striking design with the Mercedes heritage gull wing doors created huge interest in these cars and they are seen as one of the key icon concept cars of the 1970's.
There were three different design versions of the C111 created, and these did not make it into production mainly due to challenges with the plastic body shells and increasing safety regulations.
