The Nissan Skyline GT-R earned the nickname "Godzilla' at Bathurst as it was a monster from Japan. With 625 HP and four wheel drive it dominated the 1991 and 1992 Bathurst races.

The 1992 race caused some controversy as it was rain shortened, and the Skaife-Richards Godzilla was out in front when it formed part of a crash that saw the race called off. Many Ford and Holden fans voiced their displeasure at these drivers on the podium given their car was undriveable at the conclusion.

Resistance was building with the governing body too, and subsequent rule changes heralded in the current era of lower cost V8 Supercars.

Motor racing fans will recall the 1992 race with some sadness as former Formula One legend Denny Hulme died after suffering a heart attack while on lap 33.
