Mark Skaife is considered one of the best Australian Touring Car drivers ever, winning the V8 Supercar championship five times and winning at Bathurst six times.

2002 was the first year of the new V8 Supercar series and Mark Skaife dominated the season, winning the first five races. His 2002 season win come after back to back wins in the previous two years.

This 2002 Bathurst race saw Mark Skaife reunited with Jim Richards, who last raced together and won at the 1991 and 1992 races in the 'Godzilla' Nissan GT-R.

The V8 Supercar series initially was more of a broadcasting/ownership change, with a view of promoting more races and growing public interest. The cars did not differ much during this season, however that had changed by 2009 with a 'car of the future' project that has seen the vehicles become more generic.
