The first ever Holden win at Bathurst was the driving team of McPhee (all but one lap) and Mulholland in the new Monaro with a 327 Chev engine. Normally Bathurst was about trying to go the fastest, but with this powerful engine the drivers were more concerned about their ability to brake.
McPhee won partly through smart tactical thinking, by fitting hard wearing buffed street tyres, rather than race tyres that everyone else was running,
