Dick Johnson and John French won the 1981 Bathurst race, which was the first time that the race did not go the full distance. A significant crash occurred and the race was called off, with Dick being in the lead with 121 laps completed out of the normal 163.

This was the first and only Bathurst race with a reigning Formula One champion also driving - Alan Jones who raced a Holden Commodore. He only completed one lap in the race due to a failed engine which was overheating before his driver change.

This race was the fifth and last win recorded by a Cleveland 351 Ford engine and unfortunately for Ford it was their last win at this event until 1994.
