Drivers outside of Australian and New Zealand may wonder why a fluorescent design like this holds so much fan interest. The 1986 Bathurst winner was the last win by a privateer / independent, racing without major support by a manufacturer.

Allan Grice had been racing at Bathurst for fifteen years, and this was his first ever win. His co-driver Graeme Bailey was his financial backer, a chicken farmer from New South Wales and he was seen as more of a gentleman driver. He drove for an hour and despite one mishap managed to keep his car clean. This also meant that Grice drove for 137 of the 163 lap race.

Allan became the first ever driver to average a 100mph lap time over the Bathurst race circuit. He went on to win the 1990 race and later became a local politician.
