It's hard to imagine that a car that started production with just 51hp would go on to become a famous race car but that is the case with the Alpine A110.

With an innovative fibreglass body, the Alpine 110's swept to a 1-2-3 victory at the 1971 and 1973 Monte Carlo rally events and won the inaugural World Rally Championship in 1973.

By the close of the Alpine A110's fourteen years of production, power output did grow considerably from 51hp to 183hp. Interestingly the A110 was also produced under different names in Mexico (Dinalpin), Bulgaria and Spain.

Alpine was first named by Jean Redele during one rally event in his Renault 4CV, as he enjoyed himself so much when racing across the Alpines. The company came later in 1955 buoyed by the success of his Renault A106 'Speciale' cars that came first and second in the Mille Miglia. Alpine actually created the prototype F1 car for Renault, before their first entry in 1977.
