Dale Earnhardt Snr is regarded is one of the greatest Nascar drivers ever. He achieved seven Nascar championships before his unfortunate death on at Daytona in 2001.
He was dominant in the period of 1986 to 1994, winning six of his Nascar championships in this nine year period, most of it sporting the number 3 and the black colour scheme sponsored by Goodwrench.
The Daytona 500 was the one race that he found difficult to win. As he headed into the 1998 race he was under pressure for having a 46 race winless streak, however he managed his only win with a lack of crashes suiting his driving style.
Nascar racing was a family affair, his father Ralph was an early Nascar driver, and his son Dale Earnhardt Jnr went on to win Daytona.
While there are many safety legacies from his untimely death, he remains a fan favourite to this day and many streets are named after him.
