The Austrian Jochen Rindt is the only F1 World Champion who won his title posthumously, having unfortunately been killed in practice at Monza. He won the 1970 title as no other driver could surpass his points in the remaining races left in that season.
His victory at the Monaco Grand Prix that year has been described as one of the most dramatic in F1 history, and certainly at that circuit, when Jack Brabham was in the lead but crashed at the final corner.
While 1970 was the year that Lotus unveiled the very successful Lotus 72, Rindt initially favoured the older 49C car which he won at this dramatic Monaco race.
Prior to Lotus, Rindt drove for Cooper and Brabham in F1, and also won the 1965 Le Mans race for Ferrari.
