The BMW M1 Procar race series was set up to allow drivers from F1, European Touring Car and other racing formats to be able to race each other in identical BMW M1 Cars.
The five fastest Formula 1 drivers on Friday practice were each assigned a car, as the 1979 series aligned their races to the Formula 1 schedule.
Niki Lauda won the 1979 series by just five points over Hans Stuck, while in 1980 it was Nelson Piquet who took the championship victory.
While a show case for BMW, they decided to focus on Formula 1 race engine development and starting supplying Brabham, ending the Procar championship after 1980.
