Herb Thomas became the first driver to win two Nascar championships, and during the period 1951 to 1956 was the dominant driver with these two championships and three other seasons finishing in second place.

His switch to the Hudson Hornet propelled him into his first championship win. While only powered with a six cylinder engine, its construction and design resulted in a low centre of gravity. This meant it could corner faster than the 'Rocket 88' v8 Oldsmobiles and overcame the power deficiency. That said, Smokey Yunick worked on these 6 cylinder engines to extract as much power as possible.

While a crash ended his driving career, Herb still holds the Nascar record for the highest win percentage with victories from 21% of his race starts.
