The Circuit de la Sarthe was built in 1923 and hosts one of the most famous motorsport races of all time - the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was conceived as a different type of test for manufacturers than pure speed, with reliability and fuel efficiency being equally as important.
Orginally built in a triangle shape between the towns of Le Mans, Mulsanne and Arnage, it was enlarged in 1932 to the distinctive shape it has today, encompassing a distance of 13.6 km.
The circuit is very tough on cars even ignoring the 24 hour duration, due to running at full throttle for the majority of the track, with sharp tight corners in the mix to add strain to the brakes and tyres. The main 'Mulsanne' straight at 6km long was so fast that speeds in excess of 400 kph (250 mph) were achieved before two chicanes were introduced in 1990 to reduce this straight to three sections, in order to improve race safety.
Porsche has been the most successful manufacturer at Le Mans with 19 wins, and Tom Kristensen as the most successful driver with 9 wins.
Originally drivers ran across the track to enter their cars to start the race. This practice was abandoned in 1970 after it became habitual for drivers to fasten their seat belts at some later stage in the race rather than lose time at the start.
