Buck decided to become a race car driver while working as a bus driver in Charlotte. His career was successful and long lived, as he only retired in 1976 while aged 57.

He won two back to back championships but he just missed out on a three-peat having placed second in the 1958 round.

His 1956 championship win was notable as he drove both Chrysler and Dodge at a time when both Ford and GM were investing heavily. Following the tragic death at the 1955 Le Mans, 1957 saw the major motor manufacturers pull out of motor racing.

This helped create the special legend of the 'Black Widow' 1957 Chevrolets that didn't receive official support but guidelines were issued and spare parts arrived. These cars dominated the 1957 series and Buck Baker had switched to Chev and took the 1957 championship.

This shirt design is inspired by the 1957 Chev, notable for running fuel injection in some circuits but banned in others, where it ran with a four barrel carb.

Buck was inducted into the Nascar Hall of Fame in 1982. His son Buddy also had a successful Nascar career.
